Do you enjoy baseball?
Did you revel in the excitement watching the WBSC & see the USA Women's National Baseball Team take the field in Thunder Bay & defeat #1 Ranked Japan?
Then make your way to Durham next week and see 60 of the top athletes in the game.
Young players in their teens with Grit & Promise & veteran players who have mastered the game will be playing some of the most competitive baseball you have ever seen. Women who play & coach on professional teams and those still in high school will meet at the Durham Bulls field next week.
Sue Zipay, AAGPBL pitcher for the Rockford Peaches, is the guiding force behind the All-American Girls Baseball Classic. She began this gathering of champions 2 years ago with the first Classic held in Sarasota. Sue's goal is to give women the opportunity to have a league of their own #ALOTO. Sue gathered an assemblage of Olympic level baseball players from Australia, Mexico, Canada, the USA & more to play one another. These athletes would gather for 1 weekend & form 4 teams that would play some of the most competitive and excellent baseball that fans have ever seen.
These women would take on the team mantles of four of the original AAGPBL teams, the Comets, Belles, Peaches & Blue Sox. Their enthusiasm, baseball talent and fierce competitiveness were hallmarks of the Classic.
Zipay's passion had become a reality with the dawn of this new Classic. It began in 2019 when Sue founded the American Girls Baseball (AGB) organization. There are several other people who now serve on the AGB board
The AGB is an affiliate of the AAGPBL Players Association and combined these 2 organizations honor the great women who played in that league from 1943 to 1954.
The AGB's vision: "To benefit all-female baseball players who want to have a choice between softball and baseball and provide them with opportunities to train, participate, and compete in the game of baseball at every level, including high school, college, and professional."
The Classic is one of the first steps to building on that admirable vision.
At BaseballBiz On Deck we advocate Women's baseball and encourage our audience to participate as coaches, players, administrators and mostly as fans to be part of the AGB vision & purpose. We all need to support young girls in the local recreation and school leagues to be part of the game. We are beginning to see young women like Olivia Pichardo play on D1 Collegiate teams and Kelsie Whitmorer on professional baseball teams.
One day, hopefully soon, we will see a new "League of Their Own" Until then enjoy the beginnings of what that league can be with the upcoming Classic in Durham. and support an exciting game and its players.
We hope to see you soon next week in Durham.
Gratefully,
Mark
