00:00:00.050 --> 00:00:00.469
Hey, Chris.

00:00:00.530 --> 00:00:01.760
I'll have to have you back here again, man.

00:00:01.760 --> 00:00:17.129
And you know, we talked about your history in the game before, and to me it's exciting to see somebody who's had the opportunity to play so many different places, whether it be with the Yankees organization, the Blue Jays, the Tigers, the Nationals, I believe as well.

00:00:17.519 --> 00:00:19.036
And frontier League Pecos.

00:00:19.545 --> 00:00:23.716
Man,, you saw quite a bit of career and we kind of traveled with you on some of that.

00:00:23.955 --> 00:00:25.216
The last time we talked.

00:00:26.056 --> 00:00:29.536
I think we were getting to the point where you were going to be with the Blue Jays.

00:00:29.806 --> 00:00:31.185
Tell us how that step happened.

00:00:32.835 --> 00:00:36.771
Yeah, so I was signed by the Yankees in 20 13.

00:00:36.884 --> 00:00:40.935
I unfortunately showed up to camp with like a stress reaction in my middle, in my forearm.

00:00:41.024 --> 00:00:43.274
So I missed my first full year with the Yankees.

00:00:43.865 --> 00:00:47.115
Re-signed with the Yankees in 2000, or stayed with the Yankees in 14.

00:00:47.115 --> 00:00:47.804
Had a good year.

00:00:48.604 --> 00:00:50.115
And then 15, I got res resigned.

00:00:50.115 --> 00:01:01.006
And then I had a really good camp, actually, but then, I don't know, I don't even know if I brought this story up to you, but I got released the last day of camp in 2015 by the Yankees, and I'd only given up one hit all spring.

00:01:01.012 --> 00:01:08.296
I was pretty, I thought I was gonna go to Double A, you know, they gave me the, I was, I guess I was at 26, man, Ann, on that AA roster and I'll never forget it.

00:01:08.302 --> 00:01:11.537
And I, I'm packing up my locker got my car all packed up.

00:01:11.537 --> 00:01:13.066
I'm ready to drive up to Trenton, New Jersey.

00:01:13.757 --> 00:01:17.917
And I go, I'm like they tell me to meet, meet him back in the back room.

00:01:18.066 --> 00:01:24.826
And I thought Danny Burrell was my pitching coordinator at the time, and I thought, oh, like, he just kind of tell me like, Hey, just continue to do what you're doing, da, da, da.

00:01:25.236 --> 00:01:29.716
So I go back to the pitching coaching office and nobody's back there except for Greg Pavlick.

00:01:29.736 --> 00:01:32.463
He was kind of our rehab coordinator and everything like that.

00:01:32.463 --> 00:01:34.203
He's an awesome guy and.

00:01:35.058 --> 00:01:36.319
He goes, Hey, good luck, Smitty.

00:01:36.319 --> 00:01:37.308
You gonna keep pitching?

00:01:37.519 --> 00:01:39.108
And I was just like, what do you mean?

00:01:39.108 --> 00:01:39.978
Am I gonna keep pitching?

00:01:39.978 --> 00:01:40.519
Of course I am.

00:01:40.519 --> 00:01:42.228
I said, I'm like about to go to Trenton, New Jersey.

00:01:42.259 --> 00:01:44.959
And he is like, oh, oh, okay, well good luck to you.

00:01:45.769 --> 00:01:49.879
So I walk out of the room and I already, mind you, I've already been released three or three times at this point.

00:01:50.509 --> 00:01:53.688
So right then and there I was like, something's about to happen.

00:01:54.498 --> 00:02:00.228
So I walk out, I text one of my good friends, Alex Smith, who's on his way up to Trenton already, and I'm like, dude, I think I'm about to get released.

00:02:00.259 --> 00:02:01.379
He's like, man, no way.

00:02:02.009 --> 00:02:03.319
And then Sure.

00:02:03.319 --> 00:02:10.579
Shit, two seconds later, you know, Gil Patterson comes over, he is the other pitching coordinator at the time, and he goes, come here, Smitty in.

00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:11.479
And I was like, uhoh.

00:02:11.538 --> 00:02:12.709
I was like, there's the reaper.

00:02:12.709 --> 00:02:13.158
I know.

00:02:13.218 --> 00:02:16.098
And so, and I've been seeing guys, you know, it's, it's, it's tough.

00:02:16.104 --> 00:02:21.468
During spring training we talk, this is another thing too about spring is you see a lot of your buddies that get cut.

00:02:21.783 --> 00:02:23.133
You know, and get, get released.

00:02:23.133 --> 00:02:31.563
And that's a, that's a difficult part of the game too, is like you lose friends in this game that go to different organizations or lose their job, you know, that's a, that's a very tough pill to swallow for these guys.

00:02:31.563 --> 00:02:45.158
But yeah, they called me back and they went back there and Gary Denbow was our farm director at the time and kind of just told us, told me basically, you know, like there's some guys that they wanna give opportunities to and didn't really see me fit in the needs of the organization and.

00:02:46.218 --> 00:02:48.954
and, and it's, it was a tough pill to swallow, you know?

00:02:48.954 --> 00:02:53.663
It's like you feel like you kind of give your all, but at the same time you understand the value that's next to your name, and that's a dollar.

00:02:54.024 --> 00:02:56.813
So the dollar amount, unfortunately, in the game of baseball means a lot.

00:02:56.993 --> 00:03:01.973
And I got a plane ticket, you know, to spring training in 2013 and then 14.

00:03:02.033 --> 00:03:06.593
You know, I, I had a decent year enough to, I felt like I'd get an opportunity again in 15.

00:03:06.593 --> 00:03:13.977
But hey, we had to stack, we had stack rosters all throughout our system in that year, so, Yeah, so whenever they released me went home.

00:03:13.977 --> 00:03:19.336
I signed another independent ball contract cuz I was, I mean, the previous year was the first year I was hit 95 as a reliever.

00:03:19.937 --> 00:03:23.537
So I thought, you know, like they, they moved me from a starter to a reliever at that point.

00:03:23.896 --> 00:03:30.556
And so then I was like, Hey, like I can't, I got too much gas in the tank to let it go, you know, I can't, I can't quit now, so come back home.

00:03:30.556 --> 00:03:31.907
I signed a contract with St.

00:03:31.907 --> 00:03:41.731
Paul Saints and then I was home for about a week and then I got a text from Danny Burrell and he said, he just sent me like, Hey, how you doing with like a smiley face?

00:03:42.211 --> 00:03:43.810
And I was like I'm doing great.

00:03:43.837 --> 00:03:47.018
Obviously wish I was still like pitching right now in the season.

00:03:47.078 --> 00:03:54.211
He goes, and then next thing I know, I got a, a call from from the assistant farm director and they actually resigned me to come back.

00:03:55.007 --> 00:03:56.496
So the Yankees resigned me to come back.

00:03:56.538 --> 00:03:58.248
They told me I was gonna go up to double A.

00:03:58.248 --> 00:04:01.338
They put me in extend spring training for a little bit for like three or four weeks.

00:04:01.429 --> 00:04:09.799
And then I went to High A pitched well, and then I went to double A and I, I don't know if I mentioned this to you last time, I had a really good month and then I had one bad outing.

00:04:09.799 --> 00:04:11.269
Probably the worst outing in my career.

00:04:11.868 --> 00:04:15.427
Yeah, I gave up seven runs and like two-thirds of an inning.

00:04:15.937 --> 00:04:16.958
Broken back fits.

00:04:17.048 --> 00:04:18.218
Yeah, it was, it was tough.

00:04:18.218 --> 00:04:19.687
My parents were there in the stands.

00:04:19.754 --> 00:04:21.059
Danny Burrell was at that time.

00:04:21.059 --> 00:04:25.139
I had like a 1.2 or 1.3 RA through my first whole month.

00:04:25.139 --> 00:04:29.559
And then that one bad outing shot me up to like a six or five or something like that.

00:04:29.738 --> 00:04:36.555
And then the next day I got put on the Phantom dl and then the next day we went to Binghamton and was in Binghamton.

00:04:36.613 --> 00:04:42.223
Throwing a bullpen and then two days later they, they sent me down from Trenton, New Jersey back to extended spring training.

00:04:43.244 --> 00:04:46.853
So I drove 17 hours all the way back down to extended.

00:04:46.853 --> 00:04:50.617
Yeah, I was in extended spring training for about another week, and they put me back in high A.

00:04:51.137 --> 00:04:52.307
I was in high A.

00:04:52.817 --> 00:04:58.836
And I went in about about a month and a half, two months without giving up a run, and I got that eerie feeling again.

00:04:58.836 --> 00:05:00.156
I don't know, I, I never forget it.

00:05:00.161 --> 00:05:03.336
I called my agent and I was like, man, I was like, I'm getting a lot of weird looks.

00:05:03.877 --> 00:05:11.430
And I was like, I know we got some guys that are coming off the d l And this is another thing too, like no fault to those guys that are coming off like the disabled list.

00:05:11.430 --> 00:05:12.511
Like they're, they're my buddies too.

00:05:12.511 --> 00:05:13.141
I understand.

00:05:13.141 --> 00:05:15.120
Like where they are in the organization, I understand them.

00:05:15.180 --> 00:05:18.781
The money that's next to their name, again, we're talking about that value, that number.

00:05:19.201 --> 00:05:23.947
And so yeah, then they called me in Tommy Phelps was my pitching coach.

00:05:24.038 --> 00:05:25.255
And Called me in.

00:05:25.315 --> 00:05:31.136
We just got done from a doubleheader and in to like one o'clock in the morning and we drove four hours across the state.

00:05:31.225 --> 00:05:34.795
And then we walked in the next day and we were in Jupiter Florida.

00:05:34.795 --> 00:05:38.605
I dropped off my bags and they said, Hey, Smitty, we need to see in the office.

00:05:38.725 --> 00:05:40.466
And I was like, all right, here we go again.

00:05:40.975 --> 00:05:41.665
And that was tough.

00:05:41.670 --> 00:05:43.255
That was a really, really tough pill to swallow.

00:05:43.255 --> 00:05:46.495
And this is like, and I knew it was gonna be my end of my tenure with Yankees.

00:05:46.495 --> 00:05:47.156
I just knew it.

00:05:47.545 --> 00:05:49.165
You know, you just kind of get that gut feeling.

00:05:49.875 --> 00:05:56.865
It was very challenging because like I told, like I said, like I lost, I felt like I was losing like 25 of my best friends out there.

00:05:56.925 --> 00:06:00.855
And they were also looking in there going, well what more could have this guy could have done?

00:06:01.305 --> 00:06:01.545
You know?

00:06:01.545 --> 00:06:08.326
And that, and that was very disheartening cuz it's like, well that tells me that doesn't matter about what you do, it matters what numbers next to your name.

00:06:08.685 --> 00:06:08.865
Right?

00:06:08.896 --> 00:06:10.725
And, and I kind of emphasized.

00:06:11.411 --> 00:06:13.564
To to the coaches that were in there with me.

00:06:13.564 --> 00:06:18.204
You know, obviously I was a little kind of butt hurt about it, but but I understand it's a business.

00:06:18.209 --> 00:06:19.975
The game of baseball is a very big business.

00:06:20.365 --> 00:06:26.964
And then I was like, you know what, like, Kind of picked my head up and called my mom and dad and was like, Hey, I'm getting released again.

00:06:27.055 --> 00:06:29.095
And, you know, it was kind of devastating for me.

00:06:29.095 --> 00:06:33.685
So I had a buddy that was with the New York Yankees too at the time, and he had a house down here in Tampa.

00:06:33.685 --> 00:06:36.564
He let me stay in his, like, kinda mother-in-law suite in the back.

00:06:37.134 --> 00:06:39.202
And I just kept my arm kinda ready.

00:06:39.223 --> 00:06:44.524
I I was, I would throw in the middle of the street with the catcher, catcher West Wilson at the time I call him.

00:06:44.524 --> 00:06:47.374
He was like the backup catcher to Kyle Higashioka.

00:06:47.394 --> 00:06:50.745
and I said, Hey man, do you mind coming playing catch with me before we go in the field?

00:06:50.745 --> 00:06:53.714
He'd come over a few, few times throughout the week just to keep my arm in shape.

00:06:54.285 --> 00:06:58.125
And then a week later, that's whenever the Blue Jays traded away, like literally all their players, you know.

00:06:58.125 --> 00:06:59.235
That was the David Price year.

00:06:59.235 --> 00:07:04.064
They got David Price, Russell Martin Tulowitzki, and they traded away basically half for farm system.

00:07:04.394 --> 00:07:11.805
Well, my agent thankfully had a good friend within the Blue Jay's organization and that's how I was able to get signed by them and they kind of signed me over.

00:07:12.194 --> 00:07:13.654
They said, Hey, he's ready to go.

00:07:13.704 --> 00:07:14.834
They signed me over.

00:07:14.834 --> 00:07:16.725
I went over to High A with the Blue Jays.

00:07:16.793 --> 00:07:22.524
And Vince Horseman wasn't the kinda the first pitching coaches that I was able to kind of come across.

00:07:22.529 --> 00:07:27.803
And I'll be honest, he was kind of a huge proponent and accelerated my career from there cuz he believed in me.

00:07:27.983 --> 00:07:29.394
Whenever I kind of showed up.

00:07:29.444 --> 00:07:32.173
One of the first questions he asked me was like, well, why did they release?

00:07:32.744 --> 00:07:35.750
And I said, I'm wanna be honest I just don't think I fit in the organization.

00:07:35.750 --> 00:07:37.310
I guess they didn't see future plans for me.

00:07:37.310 --> 00:07:38.689
I guess I was too old at that time.

00:07:38.689 --> 00:07:41.639
I was like 25, 26 in High A.

00:07:41.639 --> 00:07:44.779
And, and he goes, well, he goes, we don't care about your number.

00:07:44.810 --> 00:07:46.040
We don't care about the age here.

00:07:46.040 --> 00:07:47.839
We care about if you can pitch or not.

00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:49.220
So we're looking forward to seeing what you can do.

00:07:50.245 --> 00:08:01.399
and the first night in Dunedin, I, I popped like in 95, I was 95, 96, I was, I was like pitching with my hair on fire, man, So I was feeling like 95, 96.

00:08:01.399 --> 00:08:06.290
And I was actually surprised myself, but I don't know if it was just a little bit of break that I got in between.

00:08:06.295 --> 00:08:08.240
And I started a different workout routine and.

00:08:08.870 --> 00:08:14.120
I'm telling you, I just, and then the whole, and then I, all the guys that were in the bullpen were like, who is this guy?

00:08:14.420 --> 00:08:21.379
And you know, then I, then it's establish, and again, we're, we're going back to a new team and you gotta meet new guys, reestablish yourself.

00:08:21.379 --> 00:08:22.132
So it was cool.

00:08:22.132 --> 00:08:24.233
So then Blue Jay signed me, went to High A there.

00:08:24.952 --> 00:08:27.083
Pitched there for about a month, didn't give up any run.

00:08:27.112 --> 00:08:29.033
Gave up one gave up one solo homer.

00:08:29.423 --> 00:08:34.176
And then then they called me up to double A for like the last like five games of the season cuz they needed somebody.

00:08:34.416 --> 00:08:36.816
And ironically it was against the New York Yankees and Trenton.

00:08:36.995 --> 00:08:37.206
Oh boy.

00:08:37.495 --> 00:08:38.076
Oh yeah.

00:08:38.765 --> 00:08:39.515
So it was cool.

00:08:39.515 --> 00:08:40.475
I got a little revenge.

00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:45.225
I, I had two appearances in those four or five games and I ended up a run and it was, It was exciting.

00:08:45.225 --> 00:08:48.725
And then the Blue Jays in inevitably ended up re-signing me again.

00:08:48.731 --> 00:08:50.936
They went ahead and gave me a new contract for the next year.

00:08:50.936 --> 00:08:56.066
And then that's kind of when I went to Puerto Rico in the off season for winter ball for my first opportunity in winter ball.

00:08:56.395 --> 00:08:59.005
So it's, the story continued from there.

00:08:59.546 --> 00:09:01.316
That's how I initially got with the Blue Jays.

00:09:02.306 --> 00:09:02.515
Yeah.

00:09:02.515 --> 00:09:03.056
Wow.

00:09:03.145 --> 00:09:03.625
Wow.

00:09:04.941 --> 00:09:06.030
What was Puerto Rico ball Like?

00:09:06.030 --> 00:09:06.630
What, how was that?

00:09:07.350 --> 00:09:08.941
It was, honestly, it was great.

00:09:09.006 --> 00:09:12.937
First time I felt like I ended, started up making money in minor league baseball.

00:09:12.937 --> 00:09:21.817
Cause when you first signed this like seven year contract, unfortunately it's not like that's the thing is everybody's, oh, you signed, you signed with the New York Yankees, your millionaire da da da.

00:09:21.822 --> 00:09:22.927
No, no, no.

00:09:22.965 --> 00:09:26.067
My first year of the New York Yankees, cause I literally cleared$11,000.

00:09:26.548 --> 00:09:30.720
So it's like, that's just a little bit of a perspective that a lot of people don't, I guess, don't understand.

00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:36.164
So did that and then went to Puerto Rico and they ended up kind of paying you a little bit better down there.

00:09:36.164 --> 00:09:38.804
And I'm gonna be honest, it's where you kind of learn how to win.

00:09:39.225 --> 00:09:42.404
Like winter ball is the first place where you really, really learn how to win.

00:09:42.404 --> 00:09:44.595
Because down there they don't care.

00:09:44.654 --> 00:09:45.644
They don't care.

00:09:46.095 --> 00:09:52.004
But like, they don't, they're not there to develop you, you know, in the minor league system, they're, they're there to develop players.

00:09:52.695 --> 00:09:53.865
So, I mean, teams could go.

00:09:55.014 --> 00:09:56.220
25 game there, or 500.

00:09:56.220 --> 00:09:57.750
It's okay if they're like, top guys.

00:09:57.750 --> 00:09:59.490
Were just getting developed, moving on, you know?

00:09:59.490 --> 00:10:05.700
But in Puerto Rico, the Dominican, they don't care all their, their only goal is to win.

00:10:06.519 --> 00:10:08.985
So I went down there and they, they put me in the setup row.

00:10:09.375 --> 00:10:14.102
Adam Kolarek was a seventh inning guy named Joe Jimenez, who's with, he was with the Tigers.

00:10:14.102 --> 00:10:17.086
He was our closer, he was only like 20 years old at the time.

00:10:17.475 --> 00:10:20.535
And we had a great, then I was in Carolina, so that was cool.

00:10:20.535 --> 00:10:22.905
I got, I mean, I was away all year.

00:10:22.905 --> 00:10:24.525
Went straight there, pitched there.

00:10:24.586 --> 00:10:26.339
I had like 22 appearances.

00:10:26.408 --> 00:10:34.519
our team got eliminated from the playoffs, and then the Dominican team the Australians called me after we got eliminated and was like, Hey we'd like to kind of have you come over here.

00:10:34.519 --> 00:10:37.985
So on New Year's Day, I flew from Puerto Rico to the DR,(Dominican Republic).

00:10:38.434 --> 00:10:45.245
They have a, they have a 14 game round robin in the Dominican, and I threw in about seven of those 14 games over there.

00:10:45.335 --> 00:10:49.969
No so I, I had about 22 appearances in Puerto Rico, and I had another like seven there.

00:10:49.969 --> 00:10:52.578
So I had like 30, almost 30 appearances even in winter ball.

00:10:53.543 --> 00:10:59.905
So then winter ball kind of was coming towards an end and I just got back and then our team in the DR got eliminated.

00:10:59.905 --> 00:11:07.839
I fly back home and it's so funny because I just ran across the gener, the, the manager at the time, his name is Manny Acta for Lesey, and they wanted to draft me.

00:11:07.839 --> 00:11:08.428
So that's the way the.

00:11:08.519 --> 00:11:15.509
Dominican works and like Winter Ball leagues is once a team's eliminated, they're trying to build like a super team for their like Caribbean series, right?

00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:19.803
So so they try to draft me and then I'm, and then I was like, Hey.

00:11:19.803 --> 00:11:24.004
I was like, I'm sorry, I literally just got home from like 10 months, 11 months of being away.

00:11:24.004 --> 00:11:25.833
I'm just trying to spend a little time with my family.

00:11:26.313 --> 00:11:34.466
And I was like but I ended up not re going back down there for the playoffs and then shortly after Puerto, and then I was home for like a week and I got that baseball itch again.

00:11:35.051 --> 00:11:38.921
And Puerto Rico calls me and is like, Hey, we'd like you to come pitch for us in the Caribbean series.

00:11:39.400 --> 00:11:42.760
And I was like, man, I was like, don't know if I'll get this opportunity again.

00:11:42.850 --> 00:11:44.230
And I was like, so I accepted it.

00:11:44.291 --> 00:11:59.179
So, and ironically the, the Caribbean series was back in the Dominican So I flew back to the Dominican and got to, got to pitch pitch two times down there against Cuba and Venezuela, and then came straight back and went to spring training again with the Blue Jays.

00:11:59.955 --> 00:12:03.404
And then went to, then went to the Blue Jays minor league camp.

00:12:03.495 --> 00:12:08.333
Got a couple like those like kind of come over to Major League camp and back up a couple times.

00:12:08.333 --> 00:12:13.384
I had one appearance over there, which was cool, and then went to AA and became kind of the closure there.

00:12:13.414 --> 00:12:14.730
And it was just it was, I don't know.

00:12:14.730 --> 00:12:22.811
It's like I said, I could, I could spend all day talking about kind of the career that's happened, but yeah, that's, and then Vince Horseman, like I said, I, I, I'll.

00:12:23.341 --> 00:12:32.760
Not say this, but that guy was so pivotal and believing in me, and I think I even talked about the last podcast, you know, just having somebody in your corner that can be like, this guy can do it.

00:12:32.880 --> 00:12:33.240
You know?

00:12:33.240 --> 00:12:40.171
And then putting that like, and at that time I'd already been like, again released like, Four times, twice in the same organization, twice in independent ball.

00:12:40.650 --> 00:12:47.400
So getting that opportunity and then them actually sitting down and believing me, putting me in a closure role and Double A going, you deserve to be here.

00:12:47.400 --> 00:12:48.466
We're not sending you to High A.

00:12:48.806 --> 00:12:51.181
We're not, we're not releasing you, we're not putting you in AAA.

00:12:51.181 --> 00:12:52.441
Like, we know what you got.

00:12:52.471 --> 00:12:55.831
We just wanna see you come and like really bring out your full potential.

00:12:56.071 --> 00:13:00.030
And I'm gonna be honest, like Vince Horseman did that, he started working with me on a daily basis.

00:13:00.030 --> 00:13:03.177
We had a great routine Bob Tarpey and Brian Pike.

00:13:03.177 --> 00:13:04.791
They were like my trainer and my.

00:13:05.885 --> 00:13:11.399
And and I guess our athletic trainer, they, they really like worked with me too and we just had such a good routine.

00:13:11.399 --> 00:13:14.549
And I just, and then the next thing I know, I was throwing like 97, 98.

00:13:15.210 --> 00:13:19.375
So kind of established myself and started opening up a few eyes in the organization.

00:13:19.375 --> 00:13:21.361
Gil Kim was our new farm director.

00:13:21.361 --> 00:13:30.856
The kind of Blue Jays was kind of changing some people over and had a great year that year in Double A and then got an opportunity in AAA at the end of the year when the September call up happened.

00:13:31.726 --> 00:13:33.517
And then did pretty well there.

00:13:33.517 --> 00:13:49.812
They put me in the closure role immediately and AAA all the guys went up and then we got called in the office towards the end of the year and they were like, Hey guys we're going to There's, there's probably like eight or nine of us and they said, Hey, we're going, you guys are gonna basically be going down to hot camp to stay hot just in case we wanna call you guys up to the major leagues.

00:13:49.812 --> 00:13:55.123
And for me to be even part of that conversation after kind of the journey and road I've been on, I'm like, shit, sure, no problem.

00:13:55.212 --> 00:13:56.442
Like, I'll go, no problem.

00:13:56.447 --> 00:13:57.373
No, no big deal.

00:13:57.373 --> 00:13:58.572
Like, yeah, I wanna keep pitching.

00:13:59.202 --> 00:14:03.702
So I came and, but the only problem was, is I booked a cruise.

00:14:03.817 --> 00:14:10.086
In like February or January of the year before, not thinking this was even on the radar, to be honest.

00:14:10.206 --> 00:14:11.136
I thought, oh, okay.

00:14:11.136 --> 00:14:15.427
If I get an opportunity in AAA and just kind of establish myself there, that'd be great.

00:14:15.756 --> 00:14:19.267
So they called me in and they say, we've got an opportunity to go to the big leagues.

00:14:19.326 --> 00:14:20.163
And I was like, oh.

00:14:21.062 --> 00:14:24.378
but it was like, it was gonna be like 15 or 20 days later once I got in Dunedin.

00:14:24.587 --> 00:14:25.937
So I thought, oh, it's okay.

00:14:25.937 --> 00:14:28.758
Like if I'm not called up by them, then I'll just go on this cruise.

00:14:28.878 --> 00:14:30.768
But obviously if I'm called up, I'll reschedule this cruise.

00:14:30.768 --> 00:14:31.097
Don't care.

00:14:33.317 --> 00:14:34.427
So ironic.

00:14:34.457 --> 00:14:38.477
So what happened was I'm down in, down there in Dunedin and everything's.

00:14:38.807 --> 00:14:39.378
Going Good.

00:14:39.378 --> 00:14:40.307
I'm staying warm.

00:14:40.817 --> 00:14:43.488
I'm the only player that showed up for those like two weeks.

00:14:43.488 --> 00:14:44.118
I'm the only player.

00:14:44.748 --> 00:14:49.331
And the Cruise Day comes and Gerado, which was another guy in Triple A.

00:14:49.331 --> 00:14:51.192
He was like kind of lefty sat on, he shows up.

00:14:51.341 --> 00:14:52.961
And so then I was like, you know what?

00:14:52.961 --> 00:14:54.011
I'm going on this cruise.

00:14:54.017 --> 00:14:56.991
I called Gil Kim and like, Hey, I'm sorry, like, It's cruise time for me.

00:14:56.991 --> 00:15:00.081
Like this off-season, this, this opportunity may happen.

00:15:00.081 --> 00:15:01.432
He's like, I'm so, so, he's like, damn.

00:15:01.432 --> 00:15:02.392
He's like, well, hopefully.

00:15:02.751 --> 00:15:06.621
He's like, hopefully you don't get, like, we don't need you in the middle when you're in near the ocean.

00:15:06.621 --> 00:15:10.461
I was like, well, there are planes and helicopters that I can maybe get on, get outta there.

00:15:11.001 --> 00:15:13.844
So but it's, it's, it's crazy.

00:15:13.844 --> 00:15:14.923
So then I go on this cruise.

00:15:14.923 --> 00:15:17.724
I get off in the morning at like 8:30.

00:15:17.744 --> 00:15:19.423
I go straight into the complex to work out.

00:15:19.423 --> 00:15:19.663
Again.

00:15:19.663 --> 00:15:20.563
It was like a four day cruise.

00:15:20.563 --> 00:15:22.484
It wasn't like I was gone for like two weeks or anything.

00:15:22.543 --> 00:15:23.423
I go, I go straight into.

00:15:23.423 --> 00:15:30.385
I work out, I come home and then I'm watching the game, watching the Major league game, and they're playing the New York Yankees, ironically.

00:15:31.166 --> 00:15:32.515
And there's a brawl that night.

00:15:32.816 --> 00:15:33.115
Ooh.

00:15:33.206 --> 00:15:39.285
And Benoit is running in from the bullpen and he tears his calf Wow.

00:15:39.336 --> 00:15:40.495
Running in.

00:15:40.676 --> 00:15:44.456
And then I kind of see that, that he's like rolling around in the out.

00:15:45.370 --> 00:15:46.081
and they cart him off.

00:15:46.150 --> 00:15:50.530
They take him off the field and I'm like, my agent calls me and goes, keep your phone by ya.

00:15:50.801 --> 00:15:51.910
We might get an opportunity.

00:15:52.510 --> 00:15:57.071
And then, I don't know, 15, 20 minutes later, Gil Kim calls me and goes, Hey.

00:15:57.461 --> 00:16:04.331
He's like, I wanna let you know that we're not putting you on the 40 man roster yet, but we're calling you up tomorrow.

00:16:04.811 --> 00:16:12.010
Once we kind of know the severity of Benoit's injury, then we're gonna kinda decide if we can put you on that 40 man and on the active roster.

00:16:12.520 --> 00:16:13.291
And I was.

00:16:14.005 --> 00:16:15.355
But he's like, you can't tell anybody.

00:16:15.446 --> 00:16:16.676
You can tell you're like family.

00:16:16.796 --> 00:16:18.926
Like you can tell your family, but don't tell anybody else.

00:16:18.956 --> 00:16:19.735
So I was like, okay.

00:16:20.485 --> 00:16:26.696
So getting that call, you know, like kind of gave me chills, you know, like, Hey, I'm getting called up even to go to Toronto, which was amazing.

00:16:26.696 --> 00:16:36.303
They're in a playoff hunt, you know, like, So then I called my dad and had a great conversation, let him know I was going up, and then next day landed in Toronto and they activated me.

00:16:36.724 --> 00:16:40.692
So my phone was off, obviously in the air, and as soon as I landed, boom, then I got activated.

00:16:41.023 --> 00:16:45.063
And that was kind of, that was my kind of first call up to the big leagues.

00:16:45.153 --> 00:16:47.524
And it was, that was pretty, pretty cool.

00:16:48.994 --> 00:16:49.984
It's all within like that.

00:16:49.984 --> 00:16:56.884
Like I said, that one year, and it's been, it was a crazy year, you know, and not to even think that I would be in that position and then getting there and then.

00:16:57.018 --> 00:16:59.427
It was, there was only six days left in the major league season.

00:16:59.479 --> 00:17:03.548
But we had, we had three games against Baltimore and then another three against Boston.

00:17:04.238 --> 00:17:08.007
And I was actually able to be there for David Ortiz's last regular season game.

00:17:08.011 --> 00:17:11.576
I know we were talking about him earlier and that was, that was amazing.

00:17:11.582 --> 00:17:16.136
You know, like bunch of the rookies like stayed in the clubhouse and I was like, I'm gonna come out and watch this.

00:17:16.136 --> 00:17:20.217
So I'm like sitting out on the fence with like Pilar and Tulowitzki and Donaldson and.

00:17:20.672 --> 00:17:31.284
Russell Martin were all like, applauding, like Mary j Blige is like singing the national anthem all like the former World Series guys are coming in giving Big Papi like they're, and I don't know, I was, I was just tickled pink to be there.

00:17:31.284 --> 00:17:34.324
I was just taking it all in, like first time walking out of Fenway.

00:17:34.344 --> 00:17:35.753
I made sure like I videoed it.

00:17:35.759 --> 00:17:41.814
Like I, like I said, I was like a fanboy, but on the team, you know, and, and then my family was able to kind of come up to Fenway.

00:17:41.814 --> 00:17:45.441
My my first host family I ever had in independent ball with Lake Erie Crushers.

00:17:45.445 --> 00:17:47.300
They came up to see me.

00:17:47.300 --> 00:17:48.885
So, I mean, I don't know.

00:17:48.885 --> 00:17:51.736
It was just, it was just a really, really cool moment.

00:17:51.782 --> 00:17:55.280
I didn't even get to pitch in those first six days cuz like I said, we were in a playoff hunt.

00:17:55.280 --> 00:17:59.661
They didn't wanna throw a guy in there that, hey, I hadn't pitched since, I don't know, the end of the season.

00:17:59.661 --> 00:18:04.861
So, and then that was my first six days in the big leagues was, and we clenched on game 162.

00:18:04.881 --> 00:18:10.490
So I got to actually party with a team on Game 1 62, got the pop bottles with them in Fenway.

00:18:11.330 --> 00:18:12.111
It was, I don't know.

00:18:12.111 --> 00:18:18.560
Like I said, for my"cup of coffee" I have in the big leagues, I have stories for days just because I guess I kind of soaked it all in, you know?

00:18:18.560 --> 00:18:24.500
And, and that's why it's like for these guys that even get these windows of opportunity, it's just, it's cool.

00:18:24.500 --> 00:18:28.520
Cause I know, I know they're gonna, I know they're gonna embrace those opportunities probably just as much as I did.

00:18:29.784 --> 00:18:40.838
Well, we're looking forward to seeing those guys here in the spring training, like I said, 29 of'em with Yankees, and I don't have the numbers for the rest of'em, but I'm sure like you were saying too, because of the World Baseball Classic.

00:18:41.348 --> 00:18:43.088
There will probably be, you know, more openings.

00:18:43.088 --> 00:18:47.108
I know the Tampa Bay Rays, I think are sending 12 people to, to WBC.

00:18:47.108 --> 00:18:47.548
Mm-hmm.

00:18:47.628 --> 00:18:51.848
And there's others I've seen, I think Cardinals, I can't remember how many people they had, but mm-hmm.

00:18:52.088 --> 00:18:53.949
there's a lot Mm-hmm.

00:18:54.028 --> 00:18:54.229
Yep.

00:18:54.439 --> 00:18:57.069
So, so a lot of room for some people in Spring Training.

00:18:57.069 --> 00:18:58.319
Looking forward to that, my friend.

00:18:58.680 --> 00:19:09.549
You, you know, a funny thing, it's gonna be interesting for spring training for anybody who's a Rays fan, because they're doing all their homes, Spring Training games outside of the first one in the Trop.

00:19:10.519 --> 00:19:11.384
Oh, I didn't even know that.

00:19:11.954 --> 00:19:15.855
Yeah, they're doing their first one down the road with the, I think the ESPN Wild.

00:19:15.855 --> 00:19:16.065
Wild.

00:19:16.740 --> 00:19:17.309
Wild, wild.

00:19:17.549 --> 00:19:18.869
The port anywhere.

00:19:18.869 --> 00:19:19.769
World wide sports.

00:19:19.769 --> 00:19:19.980
Yeah.

00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:20.119
Yeah.

00:19:20.125 --> 00:19:20.579
Thank you Sir.

00:19:21.160 --> 00:19:21.400
Yeah.

00:19:21.400 --> 00:19:21.599
Yeah.

00:19:22.890 --> 00:19:30.809
And they're doing the first one down there, but after that they're going to the Trop and you know, whichever for their home games during spring training.

00:19:30.809 --> 00:19:31.109
So

00:19:32.460 --> 00:19:33.269
it'll be interesting.

00:19:33.269 --> 00:19:35.220
So, no, no Port Charlotte this year at all?

00:19:35.220 --> 00:19:35.490
Huh?

00:19:35.609 --> 00:19:36.150
No.

00:19:36.154 --> 00:19:38.670
Gonna mean the hurricane damage was just Oh, yeah.

00:19:38.670 --> 00:19:39.359
Too devastating.

00:19:39.599 --> 00:19:40.529
Too devastating.

00:19:41.329 --> 00:19:49.159
So, That'll bring a little bit of excitement, even more to the area, you know, and they're talking about moving the kinda Rays out of St.

00:19:49.159 --> 00:19:50.719
Peter, maybe finding a place in St.

00:19:50.719 --> 00:19:52.278
Peter, possibly over here in Tampa.

00:19:52.278 --> 00:19:58.598
So it's, I don't know, there's a, there's a lot of exciting stuff around the Rays, and they've got their stuff figured out there.

00:19:58.598 --> 00:20:03.638
I just watched, actually a really cool thing about their pitching coach, about how he connects with the players more.

00:20:04.318 --> 00:20:07.739
Just, not just a pitching side of things, but more on like a personal level too.

00:20:07.769 --> 00:20:15.479
Like that's like, he's like, wants to make sure they're good on a personal level that he, they e established that between like that connection between each other before.

00:20:15.679 --> 00:20:17.179
I'll be honest, that's, that's number one.

00:20:17.628 --> 00:20:18.739
It should always be number one.

00:20:18.769 --> 00:20:18.888
Yeah.

00:20:18.888 --> 00:20:23.388
You know, it's like, cuz cuz at the end of the day we are humans, you know, like we do make mistakes.

00:20:23.455 --> 00:20:25.210
We do have lives outside of baseball.

00:20:25.210 --> 00:20:31.593
There are a lot of influences and stuff that doesn't go into analytics, that doesn't get taken into consideration.

00:20:31.593 --> 00:20:36.663
And just to hear that guy kind of talk about how he approaches his pitchers, I thought was pretty cool.

00:20:37.083 --> 00:20:39.242
Kind of being on like a personal level with those guys.

00:20:39.242 --> 00:20:42.542
I think it's, and professional, but also on a personal level.

00:20:42.542 --> 00:20:44.403
I think that was pretty cool to

00:20:44.452 --> 00:20:46.732
Yeah, I mean that, that is critical.

00:20:46.773 --> 00:20:55.135
Recently I had a sports psychologist on here and you know, a couple things we were talking about as far as coaching is seeing the strength of the player that's out there.

00:20:55.586 --> 00:21:01.316
You're not gonna go out there and give them a course correction when you see there's already something that's working you know?

00:21:01.381 --> 00:21:01.740
Mm-hmm.

00:21:01.826 --> 00:21:12.221
you give some positive reinforcement, maybe a tweak or two, but if you've got a talent who's already got that level, there's really no reason to be doing that kind of tweaking.

00:21:12.671 --> 00:21:18.731
And so the, the kind of individual you're talking about as far as the Rays hitting coach, that's that's outstanding.

00:21:18.731 --> 00:21:21.821
And I think we all wish there were more coaches like that out there.

00:21:21.862 --> 00:21:22.092
There.

00:21:22.142 --> 00:21:22.201
Yeah.

00:21:22.511 --> 00:21:22.632
Yeah.

00:21:22.632 --> 00:21:24.271
The pitching coach actually, and I, he.

00:21:25.126 --> 00:21:28.132
He's with like, like you can see him like walking through and like seeing Glasnow.

00:21:28.152 --> 00:21:28.961
And stuff like that.

00:21:29.471 --> 00:21:29.711
Oh yeah.

00:21:29.711 --> 00:21:31.521
Glasnow even like, yeah, Glasnow's.

00:21:31.541 --> 00:21:37.481
Even like, man, this guy, he is just, you know, like we have a, we have a friendship beyond baseball, which is amazing.

00:21:37.481 --> 00:21:41.981
Like, like I said, I have a friendship beyond baseball with that Vince Horseman guy, like he used to live here in Dunedin.

00:21:41.981 --> 00:21:55.767
So like whenever I was trying to get through like my Tommy John injury, he was working with me here and it's because like, Because it's just like it matters whenever you know that these coaches actually care about you both on and off the field.

00:21:55.767 --> 00:21:56.696
It really does matter.

00:21:57.086 --> 00:22:03.446
Helps the player just kind of feel a little bit more, you know, like it's not like a fatherly figure, but like a mentor, you know, like you need that and you need.

00:22:04.336 --> 00:22:08.576
You need these guys that to know that you're, that they're in your corner, not just there to beat you down all the time.

00:22:08.576 --> 00:22:11.186
Cause the game, like you said, it's a game full of failures.

00:22:11.247 --> 00:22:20.287
And if you got somebody that can kind of get you through those downs and bring those, get you back to those ups, then that's a, that's a pretty pivotal person in your, in the, the organization.

00:22:21.957 --> 00:22:22.810
What's his name again?

00:22:23.020 --> 00:22:23.651
Kyle Snyder.

00:22:24.161 --> 00:22:24.580
Yes.

00:22:24.580 --> 00:22:24.941
Yes.

00:22:24.971 --> 00:22:25.121
Yeah.

00:22:25.300 --> 00:22:25.961
Kyle Snyder.

00:22:25.965 --> 00:22:26.171
Yeah.

00:22:26.221 --> 00:22:36.226
He is amazing and, and he's amazing to watch too, even on, on the tv this tall, lanky guy walking out there to talk with his pitchers, and it always looks supportive.

00:22:36.496 --> 00:22:39.316
You know, I, I don't get to hear what he's saying, but it always looks supportive.

00:22:39.705 --> 00:23:03.306
And it was interesting too because looking at Kyle being the man that he, is it, when we brought in Snell, when we brought in Glasnow with the, with the Rays, He had something else he could communicate in common too, because you're, you know, he's talking with taller fellas and I would think there's some aspects to pitching that are that are I guess, impacted by a player's stature.

00:23:03.875 --> 00:23:04.205
Yep.

00:23:04.566 --> 00:23:07.036
Kyle Snyder, the, the pitching coach for the Rays.

00:23:07.056 --> 00:23:07.205
Yeah.

00:23:07.205 --> 00:23:08.615
I've, I've always admired him.

00:23:08.945 --> 00:23:09.036
Mm-hmm.

00:23:09.276 --> 00:23:12.905
And it's kind of funny, I went to a, a FanFest for the Rays a couple years back.

00:23:13.026 --> 00:23:13.586
Mm-hmm.

00:23:13.650 --> 00:23:15.351
When I guess Glasnow.

00:23:15.365 --> 00:23:19.141
And Snell had just been here for a year, so, and I said, what, what's it like working with him?

00:23:19.141 --> 00:23:19.590
What's it like?

00:23:19.590 --> 00:23:19.800
Work.

00:23:19.980 --> 00:23:21.090
Oh man, he's great.

00:23:21.151 --> 00:23:22.320
He's fantastic.

00:23:22.651 --> 00:23:30.820
And I thought the energy that these two young men showed me that, that question, I was like, yeah, that's the kinda coach everybody wants.

00:23:31.101 --> 00:23:37.586
Yeah, and he was just, I don't know, just, you can just tell that guy in people's corner and as, and that's what you need as a pitching coach.

00:23:37.586 --> 00:23:40.435
Like you said, coming off of a bad outing or something like that.

00:23:40.435 --> 00:23:46.766
Like guy coming up and telling you like, Hey, one outing, or like tapping on the leg and kind of like, Hey, we'll go back to work tomorrow.

00:23:46.826 --> 00:23:47.006
You know?

00:23:47.006 --> 00:23:48.955
Like that just gets you going to the next day.

00:23:49.316 --> 00:23:52.891
Cause you can't like, baseball, like I said, that game of failure.

00:23:52.891 --> 00:24:00.871
But at the end of the day, there's another game the next day, and then you may not get out there that day, but you can work towards that day to get better on the next day.

00:24:01.020 --> 00:24:01.351
You know?

00:24:01.351 --> 00:24:02.161
So there's, I don't know.

00:24:02.221 --> 00:24:12.465
Just having those guys is, I think they're, Pivotal to these organizations and I think that's why the Rays have such good success and that's why their pitching staff is so good, even with them not having the top dogs.

00:24:12.465 --> 00:24:20.647
And I'm actually really, really excited to see Glasnow come back this year cuz, I mean, he's, I've actually had a privilege of meeting him a couple times and he's just a, he's a good human being too.

00:24:20.708 --> 00:24:21.577
He's a great human being.

00:24:22.988 --> 00:24:27.688
Well, like I said, the Rays, I think very fortunate to have some of the people they have and certainly with Kyle Snyder and Glasnow.

00:24:27.708 --> 00:24:28.317
Mm-hmm.

00:24:28.403 --> 00:24:31.988
and, and I wanna say that one more time because you're talking about the positivity.

00:24:32.258 --> 00:24:39.987
You know, when we first started talking on the show and the first episode with you and I, the one thing I put into the title was perseverance.

00:24:40.557 --> 00:24:47.487
and Chris, that's what I see with you today is a guy who has a direction, you know, he has something where he needs to achieve something.

00:24:47.767 --> 00:24:49.926
you, you've kind of given us your story with that too.

00:24:49.926 --> 00:24:55.896
And I, I don't think any of those things would've happened if you didn't have the commitment and perseverance that you did to that.

00:24:55.902 --> 00:24:57.686
So I think that's a great example whether.

00:24:58.162 --> 00:25:01.372
You know, in your life, in baseball, in your personal and professional life now.

00:25:01.882 --> 00:25:02.001
Mm-hmm.

00:25:02.007 --> 00:25:06.592
And anybody who gets an opportunity to meet you, you know, I think they're blessed to do so.

00:25:06.592 --> 00:25:10.882
So, man, I, I can't thank you enough for being on here today and sharing that with folks.

00:25:11.182 --> 00:25:11.481
Yeah.

00:25:11.481 --> 00:25:19.761
Abs, I mean, like, like I said, I, if I could share my story and, and inspire anybody, you know, like, I'm it, I got a lot of breaks, you know, I got a lot of bad breaks.

00:25:19.761 --> 00:25:24.291
But at the end of the day, like you count your blessings for even getting the opportunity, you know?

00:25:24.832 --> 00:25:32.662
You know, even when I wrote my retirement letter, you know, like I've always, I was always told like when you played baseball, like as long as you have a jersey on your back, you have an opportunity.

00:25:32.662 --> 00:25:35.692
And you know, and I really, really, really, really took that to heart, you know?

00:25:35.692 --> 00:25:39.051
And, and I, like I said, I came across so many good people along the way.

00:25:39.051 --> 00:25:41.902
I continue to meet good people because of baseball like you, Mark.

00:25:41.902 --> 00:25:50.751
So it just, That's what I love about, that's why the game of baseball is beautiful is like you just, it just opens up so many opportunities, not just on the field, but even beyond it.

00:25:50.751 --> 00:25:54.561
And you can just take a lot of those morals and principles that you learn through the game.

00:25:54.561 --> 00:26:00.531
And like I said, kind of put it into to real life situations, you know, and, and I've kind of done that with real estate.

00:26:00.531 --> 00:26:02.721
You know, real estate is not obviously easy.

00:26:03.517 --> 00:26:07.386
I mean, it's not rocket science, but at the same time it's, you kinda get out what you put in.

00:26:07.477 --> 00:26:08.557
So, oh yeah.

00:26:08.916 --> 00:26:22.964
So, so that's what's kind of cool, like I'm able to kind of, like I said, use my connections and still continue to watch the game I love and watch root on players that I played with, played against, you know, so it's like I said, it's, that's what makes the game of baseball very beautiful.

00:26:23.414 --> 00:26:24.555
Amen brother.

00:26:25.005 --> 00:26:25.424
Yep.

00:26:25.829 --> 00:26:27.089
Well, thank you again, Chris.

00:26:27.089 --> 00:26:33.729
It's been great having you here today on BaseballBiz On Deck, and like I was gonna say, continuing to share your story with the, with the folks here listening.

00:26:33.778 --> 00:26:38.848
Wish you again, continued success, my friend, and just keep enjoying the game.

00:26:39.358 --> 00:26:40.078
Yeah, thank you.

00:26:40.078 --> 00:26:41.159
Hey, I appreciate it.

00:26:41.159 --> 00:26:45.028
Like I said, anytime you talk shop about baseball, don't get too many opportunities with that.

00:26:45.028 --> 00:26:47.922
So always enjoying my time speaking with you and talking with you, Mark.

00:26:48.311 --> 00:26:49.692
All right, well, thank you, brother.

00:26:50.231 --> 00:26:51.011
Yeah, you got it.
